Say it with me, “I am not afraid anymore!”
When I was a kid I had a fear of the dark, I found my Grandma’s basement to be particularly scary. I mean, there could be bad guys down there, rats, and don’t even get me started on the hole in the ground with water, I was for sure going to be sucked up in that thing and be a goner! Did I have any evidence that these bad things would actually come true? Actually, quite the opposite, I had been in the basement both with people and by myself many times and exactly zero bad things had ever happened to me. I think most people would look at this and say maybe I was being a tad irrational and I had nothing to be afraid of, well I say, same to you!
Fear is defined as “an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.” Our 32nd President, Franklin D. Roosevelt said it best when he said, “the only thing to fear is fear itself” how true is this quote?
We all have all had the person we wanted to ask on a date, the huge business idea we have, the article we wanted to write, the podcast we wanted to do. Then fear comes knocking and it looks something like this, “what if I stink at this?” or “what if I fail”.
The most interesting is the mind clutter or excuse hill we create for ourselves, “I don’t have time to write, where would I even start, how can I write this?” but then maybe we finally get the courage to actually do whatever we have been scared to do for so long and then we kinda do it, we don’t jump all in because we are fearful we will fail.
I will use myself as an example, I started writing this blog 4 weeks ago. The first post took me nearly a week to share with anyone, took me until the 3rd week to share on LinkedIn (until today didn't have the courage to post on Facebook), I mean, what if people read it?!? Yeah Paul, that is kinda the point of writing, so people read it! It took a few people telling me that my writing was good and sharing it themselves for me to finally break that fear and hear we are, sharing!
Enough about me, what about you? Are you wanting to start a podcast? Do it. Want to quit your job and start a national cookie company (Plan first, but then do it). Do you know deep in your heart that you should quit your part time job and focus fully on your business? Do it. Not tomorrow, not when the “time is right” — -TODAY!
When our old friend fear comes knocking to say, “what if you fail and no one listens?” say back, “what if you succeed, and everyone listens?” “what if no one buys my cookies or doesn’t like them?” say back, “what if you sell so many you make Nestle Tollhouse ask you for your recipe?
Here is the thing, if you have never tried you have no proof about what the result will be, therefore, you just need to stuff your fear deep in the basement and do it anyhow.
So join me in walking down the basement and channeling your inner Kevin McCallister from Home Alone and scream, “I am not afraid anymore” and then do it.
